Where Bloggers Create 2013

Welcome!!

I am proud to be part of my second 'Where Bloggers Create'.  When I joined in last year I found some wonderful artists to follow and get inspired by.  I strongly recommend taking a day off, a series of snacks and settle in for a day of inspiration!

My space has stayed basically the same as last year.  However, we did have a small flood last year just after I posted my space.  We needed to pull up the carpets and repaint the floor.  I lost a bit of supplies, but this gave me the kick in the pants I needed to go through and pare down the overflow of stuff I had.  I got rid of 4 binders worth and a pile of wood mounted stamps I was not really using.  I also filled about 4 boxes full of papers and ephemera that I would not use anytime soon.  I would eventually use it up, but my hubby had put his foot down to make my semi-hording more manageable.  Got rid of restrictive shelving and replaced it with a system that works for me.  Here we go!

Walking in the basement area I share with my hubby Jim.  He builds and flies radio controlled airplanes.  He has the left side, I have the right side.

Starting at my view out the room (and of the TV and stereo to keep us company) and my work area.

Facing me now is a series of Iris shelves from Michaels that hold those 12x12 clear cases.  I use these almost exclusively for storage and for storing elements of projects in motion.  Above that is two Ikea bath medicine cabinets that I adapted to hold most of my inks.  The rest of my inks and other colouring implements are on the iris carts below.

Now going counter clock wise around my side of the room is the wall of Ikea shelving arranged for my needs.  The end unit has the remnant of my traditional scrapbooking that I am trying to sell or have plans for, along with 12x24  and rolled paper.  The top has my Gelli printing kit and other storage.  Then comes two rows of 12x12 boxes with element stored by colour or major theme.  I've discovered that when crafting I am colour influenced first, so I store all my embellishments, ribbons, etc in these boxes by colour.  All labeled for easy identification.

Next come two rows with my stamps on cling mount and stored in binders.  then some more Iris carts with more ephemera storage.  at the far left bottom is the start of my tools storage.

This built in cubby is the reason I called dibs on this side of the room :)  I have the bulk of my tools in these Iris carts with drawers.  All labeled so I can remember where everything is.

Next is my pride and joy... a lateral filing cabinet that holds 12x12 in the top drawer and 81/2 x 11 in the bottom.  On either end is two regular short filing cabinets that I've had since childhood.  The green one holds envelopes and the brown one holds computer paper and labels. On top is an old table top cut down to make more storage for my Cuttlebug, dies and smaller pieces of paper.  One of the BEST tips I got last year was to cut down all scraps to 6x6" and recycle the rest.  It helped cut down my piles of partly used paper and allowed me to USE the pieces I have!  I compromised and also made a box for 8x8" and 5x6".

And that brings us back to my work area!  Hope you enjoyed this tour and if you have any question or comments to make, please do!  I love feedback!

  2. Hi, Cindy. I would looooove to share a studio with my husband - then we could watch TV and do our projects together. :-) I really adore your colorful plastic drawers... so vibrant and happy! Thanks for letting me peek into your space. I hope you don't get any more flooding...

  3. Hi Cindy! What a great space and I love that you share with your hubby! I also LOVE your colorful drawers. You are not a hoarder - you are an artist and an artist needs lots and lots of their medium so they can express themselves creatively! Thanks for sharing your space! (I am a second timer too!)

Take care and carry on creatively!

  4. Nicely organized and lucky you that you can share space with hubby. I adore my hubby, but he's an absolute mess, so he's not allowed to share with me......;o)

  10. Hi Cindy! LOVE your creative place, and especially loved that you and your husband share the room CREATIVELY!.. I won't lie. I've been married and divorced twice, and neither shared my enthusiasm for art, nor any other creative endeavor... So I just have to say, I think that's REALLY nice!... What catches my eye most here are those Iris storage containers!! I KNOW I need some more of those, and I LOVE those bright, beautiful colors!.. Nice meeting you today, and I'll be following you right back!! ~tina

  12. Wow! I feel so badly that you had that flood BUT it would seem that it brought about some major benefits! You are so incredibly organized, you should be a professional at this! Those are great ideas regarding how to store paper as well as cutting paper down to size for the die cutting machines! I haven't had mine very long so any little tip I find, is always helpful! You also get a gold star for sharing a space with the husband - love mine to pieces but there is no way I could share a room with him, especially a creating room, he might end up painted and glued ;)

Thanks so much for the tour of your creative space and the wonderful ideas!!!! We enjoyed ourselves!

  15. So organized, and very cool that your husband and you can share space. Of course, until this year, my spaces were always just small areas that could be carved out of the rest of the house. I'm still overwhelmed by having my own. I love all of your storage containers, and the fact that you keep things labeled. I am working on that myself. My favorite thing though, is the lateral file cabinet. I would so like to have one of those. Thanks for sharing.

  18. Cindy- your organizational storage is amazing!! I'd love to have some serious storage like you do. Your space is absolute perfection! I love that you share the space with your husband-- that's pretty cool. My husband builds and flys the same kind of airplanes-- it's his favorite hobby-- next to flying real planes-- he does both.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my little space--xoxo

  29. Cindy,
Thanks for dropping by my space! I really like all of the organization within your space. This gave me an idea for the closet that is in my space in order to not waste any space in there. I like the use of your label maker so you know at a glance where all your supplies are located. I totally understand about husbands thinking we are horders when we are really just crafters that know our bits and pieces will have a purpose some day! Thank you for sharing your space with us and I look forward to following you in the future with all of your scrapbooking and card making!!

  33. Hi, Cindy!

Thank you for taking the time to visit my studio. Your studio is so well organized. You are lucky to share a space with your husband. My husband's studio is his workshop. There is way too much sawdust in there for us to share the space, but when we are both working on our projects we do take a break to have coffee and chocolate together in the afternoon.

I hope you are having a wonderful summer!

  36. Hi Cindy! Looking at your craft space I realize I need more cabinets :) I love those colourful ones! Sorry to hear about the flooding, that's awful having to rip out the carpet and repaint. Hope that won't ever happen again!
Thanks for sharing your space :)

  37. Hi Cindy. Apologies for being back since last year, I've now set up the email thingy so I get nudged your way. I like that you share your room with your other half, I can disappear for hours in mine and Ray has to come and get me out for meals etc!
I love all of those little drawers you have. Unfortunately we don't have Michaels over here. As I follow a few American blogs people are always saying that they've had this and that from there! Though my husband would probably be grateful that there isn't one here so I can't buy from there! I don't think that crafting in the UK has reached the intensity as it has in the States as yet. Though there are more sorts of craft shops opening. You never know Michaels may pop over here!
Back to your workspace, you are so neat. I, too, tend to go by colour so have things arranged that way but I'm nowhere near as tidy. My room only looks like it does at the moment because of Where Bloggers Create. It took me a long time to get it to look like that!
Thanks for popping over to see me and I'll be back to see what you're up to soon :-)

Niki, Ginger, Summer, Jack , Sophie and Penny have crossed over Rainbow Bridge. Dutch, Shadie, Goldie, Tucker and Bosley are still with us. As we get older it's harder to take care of BigDogs. The most we have ever had at one time is eight.
