6 months Temperature Blanket

Well, you can plan ahead for some projects, but some you can not, and so have to be adaptable.

I started 2020 with a temperature blanket.  I posted about this on February 2. 

I was using Bernat Handicrafter cotton solid yarn in these colours in degrees Celsius:

-30 to -26 Robin's Egg  0

-25 to -21 Mod Blue  0

-20 to -16 Hot Blue  0

-15 to -11 Blueberry  1

-10 to -6 French Blue  3

-5 to -1 Blue Jeans  6

0 to 4 Teal  10

5 to 9 Sage Green  6

10 to 14 Emerald  2

15 to 19 Chamomile  3

20 to 24 Coral Rose  2

25 to 29 Tangerine  2

30 to 35 Country Red  1

By mid June, I could no longer find most of these solid colours available, so I stopped and now have a 6 month temperature blanket.  It's quite nice, but I would have liked to complete the year.  Oh well!

The number of balls used is written next to each colour.

Permission to Start Over

During a 10 day challenge I participated over Christmas, I considered something I really should have before....

I hate to waste things.  I recycle when possible and reuse what I can.  So when a project is not gong the way I like, I tend to ignore it.  And it becomes an unfinished item.

Last year I discovered temperature quilts.  I liked the idea of doing a row of yarn on a project dependent on the local weather temperature.  You pick a high or low temperature of the day and crochet a row.

My pallet is this.  I chose a different colour for every 5 degree temperature range.  (Celsius, as we are in Canada)

The pattern was hexies, cause I LOVE hexies.  And each hexie is one week of temperatures.

The hexies were ok, but when connecting them, it became messy, the colour stuck out and I didn't like it.  I got 10 weeks done, then never continued it.

Then this challenge topic was introduced.  If you really don't like it, take it appart, and make something else, or just throw it out.  I was given permission to do so.  Funny how we need someone else to say this so we feel better about it.  We were talking about quilting, but this applies to everything creative we might do!

So I took it apart and started over.  I still had the yarn.  I still liked the idea, so I did a simpler idea.  Just rows.  I am alternating a row of double crochet and a row of single crochet each day.  So my finished throw will be 366 or so

rows long, with a row of white in between each month.  Here is January!  We've been hovering around the 0 mark lately with only a couple days going to -15.

HBC Inspired

Hello all!

Here in Canada there is a store that has its roots in the formation of our country.  It's called Hudson's Bay, formerly Hudson's Bay Company (HBC).  Back in the days of the settlement of Canada, this company representing England traded furs for products like knives, guns and many other things including blankets!  These were made of wool and had a signature look to them. It is a beautiful blanket, but neither my husband or I can stand wool.  Bit allergic, actually.  So when I saw blankets that were crocheted in the same pattern, I thought it would be a perfect project to do in the evenings while watching TV!

Because it's pretty straight forward, I just created my own pattern as I went.  Using information I found from the 2010 Crochet World magazine article by Michele Maks and also an artist on Ravelry by the name of Anteateralice, I compiled my supplies.


3x 14oz balls  Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Aran (off white)
1x 7oz ball each of the same type yarn in Black, Gold, Cherry Red and Paddy Green.

I made the blanket 143 single stitches wide.
and did the following rows:
12 rows White
8 rows black
8 rows white
8 rows gold
8 rows white
8 rows red
8 rows white
8 rows green
100 rows white  (you'll need to start a second ball here)
8 rows green
8 rows white
8 rows red
8 rows white
8 rows gold
8 rows white
8 rows black
12 rows white ( the 3rd ball will be started here)

The blanket was completed in about a month of evening sessions.  I sent it off to my friend in Alberta and she will be donating it to a cancer hospital that she is receiving treatments in right now.  Hugs Alanna!
